About the Work
The sitter's direct gaze and guarded posture create an immediate tension in Woman in a Red Dress. Her expression offers few answers, leaving the viewer to question their own position in relation to the figure. The painting draws its power from this uneasy encounter between looking and being looked at.
Beginning as a conventionally rendered portrait, the work gradually breaks away from traditional representation. Marks extend from the figure into the background, colours cross the boundary between subject and ground, and the portrait becomes less fixed while remaining recognisable.
This painting occupies an important point in Gord McTaggart's development as an artist. Through experimentation with distortion and the relationship between figure and background, it opened possibilities that would become more deliberate in later works. What began as a stylistic exploration helped establish a language for questioning how a portrait can communicate something beyond appearance.
