Fractured Dreamer

About the Work

Fractured Dreamer began as an exploration of portraiture and the relationship between the figure and the space surrounding it. The work considers the distance between how we see ourselves and how we are seen by others.

The face provides a point of recognition, while the surrounding marks, colour and disrupted edges introduce a sense of instability. What begins as a recognisable portrait gradually becomes an exploration of perception, introspection and the difficulty of holding a single, coherent image of the self.

Rather than resolving every element, the painting allows areas of uncertainty and visual tension to remain. The contrast between the more resolved face and the expressive, fragmented surroundings invites the viewer to move between recognition and ambiguity.
