About the Work
Contemplation explores the quiet distance between looking and understanding. The figure occupies a moment of inward attention, inviting the viewer to consider not only what can be seen, but what remains private and beyond immediate interpretation.
The painting holds a tension between observation and expression. Rather than treating portraiture simply as a means of recording appearance, it begins to explore how gesture, colour and the handling of paint can communicate something less definite: a state of thought, an interior presence, a moment that resists explanation.
The work marks an important point in the development of my portrait practice. It helped open a path away from the pursuit of faithful representation and toward a more expressive relationship between the figure, the painted surface and the act of looking.
About the Series
Seeing and Being Seen considers portraiture as a psychological and perceptual encounter. The paintings explore the space between recognition and understanding, asking how another person can appear present before us while remaining, in part, unknowable.
Through varying degrees of resolution, fragmentation and painterly expression, the series examines the complex relationship between the person represented, the image we encounter and the meaning we bring to it.
