About the Work

The Surface Remembers explores the tension between recognition and uncertainty. At first, the eyes and the contrast of the face establish an immediate point of connection. As the viewer moves closer, the painted surface begins to reveal another kind of presence: scraped, scarred and interrupted by marks that resist a single, settled reading.

The painting holds these two experiences together. The face remains recognizable, yet its surrounding disruptions complicate the act of looking. What seems clear from a distance becomes less certain up close.

The surface becomes more than a place where an image is made. It carries traces of decisions, interruptions and revisions. Like memory itself, it preserves evidence without offering a complete account.

The work asks what remains of a person in the image through which we come to know them—and what might remain beyond it.

About the Series

Seeing and Being Seen considers portraiture as a psychological and perceptual encounter. Across the series, the figure shifts between presence and absence, recognition and uncertainty. The paintings examine how looking can bring us closer to another person while reminding us that visibility is not the same as understanding.
