About the Work

In Ballerina, a dancer rests in a moment of apparent stillness. The relaxed pose and graceful form draw the eye, while the active marks of the surrounding background suggest an energy waiting to be released. There is a tension between the quiet figure and the restless space around her, as though the next movement is already gathering.

Working primarily in graphite, Gord McTaggart establishes the figure with precision and restraint. Oil-stick marks introduce a more spontaneous, almost childlike energy, disrupting the stillness without diminishing the dancer's presence.

The work invites an appreciation of the dancing body not only in motion, but in the moment before it moves — when grace, discipline and physical potential remain suspended in anticipation.
