About the Work
Self Portrait marks the beginning of Seeing and Being Seen, a series exploring the tension between perception, identity, and the experience of being looked at.
The portrait becomes a space for examining the relationship between the self and the viewer. Rather than offering a straightforward likeness, the work considers how identity is shaped through observation, interpretation, and the distance that can exist between how we understand ourselves and how we are seen by others.
Through the act of portraiture, the painting invites a closer consideration of what it means to look, to be looked at, and to remain partly unknowable.
About the series
Seeing and Being Seen explores portraiture as a psychological and perceptual encounter. Across the series, the figure becomes a site of tension between presence and absence, recognition and uncertainty. The paintings examine how the act of looking can reveal something of a person while simultaneously obscuring it.
The series asks not only what we see in another person, but what our own act of looking brings to the encounter.
